Students use targets worth different point values to practice their putting and chipping skills. Black out golf is an activity like Bingo that requires students to try to hit each part of the target from each distance to receive a blackout of their card.

Layout as many tumbling mats as you can across the gym floor. Have students setup the inside crease of the mat to create a low net for each pair of students to hit across. Students are to rally across this mat net using pickleball paddles and badminton birdies as many times as they can. If their birdie flies into another groups area they must leave it until the other group finished their rally. Switch partners often to allow students a chance to learn to work with others in their class. Keep track of high rally scores for the school/grade level/class.

Human Foosball

Split the class into two teams. Create lines across the gym for the students to stay on. Students must be within two steps of their line. Students try to pass the the hockey puck or field hockey ball between their teammates to try to score a goal on the other team. These technique keeps students spread apart and allows everyone to play at the same time. Regular indoor hockey rules apply.

Last Pin Down

Directions: Divide the class up into groups of 3-5 students and line them up behind respective numbered cones. Each team get one puck. Line up 10-15 bowling pins on a line 20-40 feet away from the students. The game has two objectives, 1) Kcock the most pins down, and 2) knock the last pin standing down. The team or teams that accomplish these objectives win the game. All shots must take place from directly in front of the teams cone and each student gets one shot per turn. The student who strikes the puck must retrieve it and pass it back to the next person in line. Pins that are knocked down are to be brought back to the team that knock them over. The game ends when the final pin is knocked over.

“Gocking”

Directions: Divide the class up into groups of 3-5 students and line them up behind respective numbered cones. Each team get one puck and one bowling pin. Depending upon age group, set the cone 20-50 feet away from the teams cone on the other side of the gym. When the game begins the first person in line strikes the puck and attempts to knock the teams pin down. The second person in line runs out to where the puck stopped and attempts the second shot. This continues until the team is successful in knocking over the pin. The player who knocks over the pin is responsible for putting the pin back up and returning the puck to the first person in line. The team earns a point every time they knock over a pin.

Gotcha Hockey

Directions: Students should have prerequisite knowledge of safe handling of hockey equipment. The object of Gotcha Hockey is to strike other players in the foot with a hockey puck. If a player is hit in the foot, the striking player calls out “Gotcha” and the student who was hit must do 5 squat jumps (or other exercise) before entering the game. Once the game begins, the pucks will be scattered and students may steal pucks from other students.

Rip-Off Some students start with a ball while other students start without. Students without a ball try to steal the ball from other students who are moving around the gym. Knock-Out All students have a ball and try to keep their ball inside a boundary. Students can attempt to hit, or knock-out, other students by hitting their ball outside the boundary Gauntlet There are 8 squares with a defender in each square. The rest of the students are in line each with a ball. When it's their turn each student tries to stick handle around and past the first defender, moving on to the second, then the third etc. If a player gets their ball stolen they become the defender in that square. Team Pin Challenge There are 2 teams and each team get a set of bowling pins and half the gym. Players try to pass the ball at the other teams pins to try to knock them down. Students can choose to pass or block/guard their teams pins. First team to knock all pins down wins!! 4 Goal Hockey There are 4 teams and each team has a goal. Numbers are called and those numbered students play and try to score at any goal. The team with the fewest goals wins!! Clean up the Backyard Students hit hockey or pickleball/bandminton balls across to the other teams side. Try to get more items on the other teams side. Bottle Cap Hockey Line up students and split them between two teams. Make large goals with cones. Place 3 students in goals and 3 students in the middle. Students in the middle get to move whereever they need to. Goalies have to stay on their line. Everyone else is on the sidelines. Sideline players may hit, pass, and score if a puck comes to them. They must stay on the line just like the goalies. Rotate in a circle everyone minute or two. Ralleyball Students are placed on opposite sides of the net. If teams are uneven, I give one player in the middle of the sequence two numbers, say 5 and 11.

Burn Bucket (differs from Kickball in several ways)

There is no limit on outs (burns). The entire order of one team kicks and then the teams switch places; fielders to kickers, kickers to fielders.

To get a runner out, they must be caught off base when the ball is put in the burn bucket. Outs cannot be caused by catching the ball in the air or by striking the base runner with the ball. For example, if I am up to kick, the opposing team is trying to get the ball in the burn bucket before I make it to the base. If they are successful, I am burned (out) and go back to my team's line. If the ball bounces out of the burn bucket and the runner successfully makes it to base before they can get it back in, the runner is safe.

You may have more than one runner on a base. If runners don't feel they can make it to the next base before the fielding team can get the ball in the burn bucket, they don't have to run. If the last runner is still on base at the end of the batting order, I kick and try to get them in.

Corresponding team members pitch to each other. #1 on the blue team pitches to #1 on the green team, #2 on the blue team pitches to #2 on the green team, etc. Each player gets his/her chance to both kick and pitch.

Students are to use badminton rackets to hit birdies across the net using a badminton swing (underhand or overhand hitting ok). The object is to land the birdies on the other teams mats. I called these mats the ships and the idea was to get enough birdies on each mat to sink it. For younger classes I started with small numbers to sink a ship (2 or 3 birdies). For older groups I would go up to 6 or 7. Students are allowed to guard each ship and knock away any birdies flying toward a ship, but they cannot be touching a ship at any time. Students can only pickup birdies off the gym floor. All birdies on a ship must stay there until the ship has sunk. I usually throw a deck ring on a sunken ship so everyone knows that it is already out of the game. If a student hits or drops a birdie on their own ship they are allowed to pick it up and continue using it. To spread the kids out, I have also played this with kids assigned to a particular ship. When their ships is sunk then they can move over to help another team guard their ship. Pickleball Battleship Setup 4 teams with rackets and lots of nerfy small balls. I use lollipop paddles for the younger students. Make 4 squares with cones in the gym and give each team a square to work in. Set up a rubber poly dot with one bowling pin, a tub with two bowling pins, and a folded mat with 3 bowling pins. Goal is to knock off the bowling pins with the nerf ball. If they knock one down they get to go grab it and add it to their ships. Defense of the ships is allowed. 4 Square badminton Setup 4 square and a team in each square. Set out a mat (I unfolded mine to make a square). Students are to hit the birdies onto the mat. If a team gets 5 birdies on their mat they are moved down to the bottom square. Goal is to get to the top square and stay there. Defense is fine as long as the team stays off the mat.
